Empress Wu was China's only female emperor, who ruled during the Tang Dynasty (7th century AD). She was known for her sharp intellect, strategic brilliance, and famously radiant skin. Historical texts describe her as having an ethereal glow that captivated the imperial court. Legend has it that Empress Wu consumed pearl powder regularly, believing it to promote immortality, youthfulness, and inner balance. She was also said to apply pearl powder directly to her skin to achieve a porcelain-like complexion — a beauty ritual that became deeply embedded in Chinese culture.

Beyond Empress Wu, pearl powder is deeply linked to legends of immortal beings and celestial deities. In Daoist alchemy, pearls were believed to carry the vibrational energy of immortality and spiritual enlightenment. The shimmering pearl was seen as a symbol of the Third Eye, enhancing intuition and connecting the physical body with the higher realms.

Pearl powder was also cherished in Ayurvedic and Egyptian traditions. In Ayurveda, pearls were used in potent elixirs called 'Rasayanas' to rejuvenate the body and mind. Meanwhile, Egyptian queens like Cleopatra were believed to have crushed pearls into their skincare potions for their beautifying properties.

Is Pearl Powder Vegan?

Technically, pearl powder is not considered vegan, as it originates from oysters, which are animals. However, the pearls themselves are not "taken" in the way many animal products are. Pearls are formed naturally when a grain of sand or other irritant enters the oyster’s shell. In response, the oyster coats the particle in layers of calcium and minerals—its way of protecting its soft tissue.

The pearl powder we use is made from irregular pearls that are a byproduct of the culinary oyster industry. These pearls are not harvested specifically for supplements; rather, they are diverted from jewellery production or food waste streams and ground into a fine powder. This process makes pearl powder more accessible and reduces waste.

While not vegan in the strictest sense, many people in the plant-based community choose to use pearl powder consciously, recognising its unique energetic signature and high mineral content. We encourage each person to make the choice that best aligns with their own ethics and body wisdom.
