Description

Raw Living organic Maca powder comes from a root vegetable that grows in the Andes mountains of Peru. Maca powder is full of minerals, vitamins, and protein, containing many of the essential amino acids, and particularly rich in calcium and magnesium.

Maca powder is very popular among both men and women. Maca powder contains plant sterols, the natural form of steroids.

No other food plant in the world survives at such high altitudes - up to 14,000 feet above sea level!

In Peru, Maca powder is considered a staple part of the diet: the potato-like tuber can be baked, or the ground-up powder is added to meals, and the Peruvians have been using it as an energy enhancer for over 2,000 years.

Like Aloe vera, organic Maca powder is an adaptogen and can be used without any harmful side effects.

Kate recently visited the Peruvian farmers who grow our maca. Read all about it here.

Kate says, "I really would put free maca on the NHS for all women. It's a game-changer whatever cycle of womanhood you're in - puberty, menstruation, coming off birth control, pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause, menopause. At this point in my life I take 1-2 tbsp probably 3-4 times a week."

Further Information

Maca has been seen in historical references as early as 1549, where Juan Tello de Sotomayor, a Spanish Conquistador, describes receiving maca roots as a tribute form the Indians for the purposes of improving fertility of Spanish cattle.

From there, it is rarely heard of again until 1846, when a German Botanist, Wilhelm Gerhard Walpers appoints its botanical name after thorough scientific studies for the first time on this Andean crop; and so, Maca was called “Lepedium meyenii, Walp.”. Even with its scientific discovery, Maca would not be harvested by humans and would not gain its popularity until much later in the future.

It is believed that maca was domesticated in San Blas, Junín, between 1,300 and 2,000 years ago, but little is known about its origin, except that it was grown at high altitudes (above 4,000m over sea level), where no other food was found.

Research began on growing maca as a food source in 1971, however, it wasn't until 1999 that maca was developed as a sustainable agricultural activity! This is on the Junin plateau, the perfect site for growing maca.
