Our organic Spirulina is ecologically grown outdoors on a tropical island off mainland China, in a pristine environment with tropical sunshine, pure air and fresh mountain spring water. It is grown in a controlled environment and not wild in lakes as this sometimes poses a risk in terms of toxicity and contamination. The Spirulina is produced without pesticides. The Spirulina is rigorously tested by independent laboratories for purity. It is free of toxic residues and has no chemical additives.
Spirulina is the most popular form of blue-green algae farmed for human consumption, and has been eaten by people all over the world for many decades. It is one of the best vegetarian sources of protein (about 60%), and it contains all the essential amino acids.

Is it raw?
The vast majority of Spirulina isn't raw. If a supplier doesn't specify it's raw it isn't, and you should always check as some suppliers might claim theirs is raw but unless it's a lot more expensive, it won't be. The manufacturing process is a lot longer without the use of heat and this additional production cost makes it unviable for all but the most specialist producer. Most Spirulina is manufactured under this procedure - during processing the droplets are sprayed into the drying chamber from the top of the chamber to flash evaporate the water at the temperature of 180C ~ 220C for about 5 seconds. The dry powder is then exposed to heat for several seconds as it falls to the bottom of drying chamber. The output temperature is 70C ~ 90.
If you are looking for truly raw spirulina we recommend the Gourmet brand, or E3 Live.
Raw Living was founded in Sep 2002. As a celebration of 20 years in business, we talked to some of our oldest and best customers about why they love Raw Living: the products, the service, and the ethos. Click here to play the episode.
Spirulina has a strong, slightly fishy taste, that is hard to disguise. We like it best in soups, salad dressings and other savoury dishes. Add to green smoothies and sweeten with some fresh apple juice, this works with the children. You can also try blending with fruit like banana and making fruit wraps.
Suggested serving size: One tsp a day to begin. Over time, you can work up to 1-2 tbsp a day.
